San Pedro woman killed walking home from church on Christmas Eve

Eva Tice

| POLICE NEWS | BLOG: SOUTH BAY CRIME, COURT NEWS | FACEBOOK

Eva Tice had looked forward to Christmas this year. A family adopted the disabled 60-year-old woman and her roommate, providing her a tree that sat decorated atop a table in their San Pedro apartment.

"She was very excited for Christmas," Los Angeles police Detective Patty Batts said. "She hadn't had a Christmas tree for many years. ... She was very excited about a small little duck hanging on the

tree. She thought it was real pretty."

Tice, who had a mental capacity that varied from a 6-year-old girl to a young woman, had lived a difficult life. She became a ward of the state as a young child when her parents were killed in a car wreck.

Without family to care for her, social workers and caregivers took over, helping Tice to live independently. She was married for many years to another mentally disabled man.

He died six months ago, about the time she moved into her latest apartment on 12th Street, not far from her beloved church, Hope Chapel, where she recently was baptised.

"She was an usher at the church," Batts said. "She really wanted to help. She would always come to the Friday dinners, the

Saturday garage sales. She would always come to Sunday services."

And then there was Christmas.

"She was excited about the Christmas season," a pastor said. "She was even more joyful than usual. She had a great smile on her face, looked very rested and was excited to celebrate Christmas."

Her Bible in hand, Tice walked to Hope Chapel for the 6 p.m. Christmas Eve service on Saturday.

"She was very kind, enjoyed interacting with people and and enjoyed serving

God," the pastor said.

The service ended about 7 p.m. Tice, who had recovered from a recently broken hip, headed home.

Police are not sure what happened next. Residents who heard moaning found Tice on the sidewalk on Pacific Avenue, covered with blood, her Bible at her side.

Batts said detectives know she walked along Pacific from 9th Street. Someone assaulted her between 11th and 12th streets.

Witnesses saw a man running away.

The assailant stabbed Tice multiple times, Batts said. She died at a hospital.

Detectives suspect the motive was robbery, but do not know if he took anything.

"It's Christmas Eve," Batts said. "She's coming from a church service carrying her Bible. She is mentally disabled, physically disabled, all of 4-foot-11 and somebody assaults her. For what? I don't know at this time. All they had to do is just take it from her."

The crime has shaken congregants at her church, including a female pastor, who did not want her name published for fear of retaliation from a killer nobody knows.

"She attended church every week," the pastor said. "She was a sweet gal."

A worship leader mentioned her death during Christmas services on Sunday, but no one knew the circumstances.

"We are very disappointed that this has happened," the pastor said. "We hope that the person is found as quick as possible."

Detectives who have little to go on believe somebody must have seen something that can help them find a something.

"We need the public's help," Batts said. "When we watch video from the surrounding businesses, we can see heavy vehicle traffic in both directions. We can see pedestrian traffic."

A busy bar is located at 11th Street and Pacific.

Batts asked anyone with information to call her at 310-726-7889 or Detective David Alvarez at 310-726-7879.

"I know people saw things," the detective said.

4 personal finance technology trends for 2012 (AP)

NEW YORK ? If you're one of the holdouts still paying bills with checks, tracking your accounts with pen and paper or clipping coupons from the newspaper, 2012 could be the year you take the digital plunge.

A host of budding personal finance services and applications are poised to go mainstream in the new year, and together, they will likely have a big impact on the way Americans bank, shop, and track their finances. Some of the services are web-based, but many take advantage of the proliferation of smartphones, which are now carried by one-third of U.S. adults ? with more likely to join that crowd in the next few days after receiving the gadgets as holiday gifts.

Whether online or mobile, here are some personal finance technologies to watch in 2012:

? Mobile money

The September launch of Google Wallet was just one high-profile move toward the use of smartphones for payments, replacing credit or debit cards. The technology allows users to wave their phones in front of payment terminals and have transactions deducted from linked bank accounts or credit cards. Expect more options for electronic payments from mobile service providers and card networks next year, and wider adoption of the terminals by retailers, mass transit systems and more.

Another innovation that is already being heavily promoted is person-to-person payments. American Express Co., MasterCard Inc., Visa Inc. and PayPal all offer ways for their customers to send and receive money using links to various accounts and cards. As the TV commercials depict, if this technology takes off there will be no more fumbling for cash when it's time to split the check at a restaurant, and sending money across town or across borders will be easier, faster and less expensive.

? Non-bank money management

Mint.com, the popular personal finance site, was only the beginning. A raft of new money management tools are now available that can help users keep track of bills, investments and other aspects of their financial lives.

Among the standouts is Manilla.com, which not only pulls together household bills and financial accounts, but also helps users keep track of details like travel rewards points and magazine subscriptions. The service provides reminders for when bills are due and has features that make it easy to pay bills or set up auto payments. Since the company's goal is to help its customers eliminate paper clutter, there's even a way to store electronic account statements. And it has a smartphone app for accessing all these functions on the go.

Other non-bank options include Pageonce, an app that automatically tracks bills and enables users to make payments on their phone; savvymoney.com, a site that offers debt-management help; and Betterment.com, a site designed to simplify investing.

? Targeted deals

The combination of geo-location technology that can track your movements when you're carrying your smartphone, and QR codes, those weird squares appearing more and more often in advertising, is enabling companies to offer personalized discounts and on-the-spot deals to customers willing to opt into their programs.

Mall shoppers have already started getting texts and emails designed to lure them into certain stores, and the technology can also be used to encourage customers to enter contests, demonstrate new apps or products and even contact customer service.

? Social commerce

Javelin Strategy & Research, a financial services research firm, is using this term to identify the trend toward the combination of commerce and social networking on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

While these sites are moving toward making it easier to shop without navigating toward a link, that's just one step toward social commerce.

The concept of financial social networking is also being expanded by companies like Weemba.com, whose site allows individuals to search for a loan by posting nontraditional details like a description of the need for the money ? debt consolidation, a mortgage refinance, or a kitchen makeover complete with the designer's plans, for instance. The details posted add depth to the usual credit score and financial information that banks and other funders may review, and the site opens the lending request to a wider audience.

Other examples of the use or concept of social networking include Kickstarter.com, where creative types can seek funding for their artistic endeavors and those willing to provide seed money can choose to provide all or part of the needed funds to get the project off the ground.

Saveup.com is a game aimed at helping individuals pay down debt and build savings, and Bundle.com uses data tracking and spending information to produce lists of popular restaurants and stores in selected cities, helping users find the right spot at the right price.

Banks are also experimenting with ways to make use of social networking to interact with customers, with some success. Even Bank of America Corp., a recurring target for gripes large and small about the financial system this year, has nearly 365,000 "likes" on its official Facebook page, which it uses for efforts like supporting community causes and advertising opportunities like its Student Leader program, which offers paid internships to high schoolers who work at charitable organizations.

Customers can expect more on these fronts from startups and big financial institutions in the next 12 months.

Walgreen unlikely to make up with Express Scripts (Reuters)

Dec 21 (Reuters) ? Walgreen Co (WAG.N) still believes it can succeed even if it stops filling prescriptions for Express Scripts Inc (ESRX.O) on January 1, and its stance suggests that the odds of the drugstore making up with the pharmacy benefits manager before the end of the year are remote.

Walgreen, the largest U.S. drugstore chain, has been battling with Express Scripts since June 21, when Walgreen said the companies could not agree on terms for a new contract.

Even before their old contract expires, Walgreen's decision to part ways with Express Scripts cost it a penny per share in pharmacy sales in the first quarter, and another penny per share in expenses, the company said on Wednesday.

Those costs, along with lower reimbursement rates and margins, led to an unexpected drop in quarterly profit.

Now, Walgreen is "moving on" after it made what Chief Executive Greg Wasson called "another serious attempt" to reach a deal last week, days before the contract expires on December 31.

Its shares fell as much as 8 percent, then recovered a bit and were down about 1 percent at $33.31 in afternoon trading.

Walgreen, armed with fresh survey data, said that many Express Scripts clients want to keep filling prescriptions at its stores.

Walgreen and Express Scripts appear unlikely to reach a deal by the end of the year. Even if they make amends in early 2012, as some expect, patients will already be taking their prescriptions elsewhere, dragging potentially billions of dollars in revenue away from Walgreen and putting it in the hands of its competitors, such as Caremark Corp (CVS.N).

"We remain concerned that patients could develop new buying habits as they are forced to move away from (Walgreens) to other retailers if no deal is reached," said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Tom Gallucci, who noted that once they take their prescriptions elsewhere, not all patients will come back to Walgreen even if they get the opportunity to do so.

Walgreen said it remains open to any fair and competitive offer from Express Scripts, which contends that it would only keep Walgreen in its network at rates and terms that it believes are right for its clients.

Walgreen, seeking to downplay the potential impact of the dispute on its business, has been trying to show the strength of its massive network of more than 7,810 pharmacies.

It said that more than 100 health plans, employers and various Express Scripts clients told it they either had changed PBMs or made sure patients would still have access to Walgreens pharmacies in 2012.

However, as health-care costs rise, employers and other contract managers are doing whatever they can to control spending.

"The market is moving in a direction that at this point is away from Walgreen's core strengths," said Scott Mushkin, an analyst at Jefferies & Co.

Meanwhile, CVS is showing that its decision to combine its thousands of drugstores with a pharmacy benefits management business in 2007 was expected to turn into a profitable success next year, as more companies choose its services.

While Walgreen has some partnerships, it cannot go out and negotiate prescription contracts like others such as CVS can, Mushkin said.

"Their strategic positioning appears to be a little bit off," he said. "One solution would be to beef up their retail market share."

Walgreen has used acquisitions to add to its store count before, most notably buying the Duane Reade chain in 2010.

(AP) ? Dirk Nowitzki has an idea of what it's like to be an NBA champion. He learned one of the lessons over the years he spent being teammates with Devean George.

Nowitzki noticed that before practically every game, George found someone warming up on the other side of the court and greeted them with a smile and a hug that seemed warmer than most pregame how-do-you-do's. Nowitzki eventually asked George why. The answer: they were his teammates, guys he had one an NBA title with during one of those three magical seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Once you win a championship," George told Nowitzki, "it's like a bond. It's like family forever."

Nowitzki told that story the first day he met with reporters after the lockout. Although the last time he'd been at team headquarters was for the championship parade, a day when everyone vowed to stick together and try winning it all again, Nowitzki returned knowing the Mavericks would lose several valuable contributors.

So while Nowitzki was going to miss Tyson Chandler bailing him out on defense, J.J. Barea zipping through the lane or nailing a long 3 and Caron Butler taking some the scoring load he also knew those guys would always have a special place in his life.

And, he trusted Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson to find competent replacements.

Sure enough, the front office plugged holes with some big names, practically swiping Lamar Odom from the Lakers and signing Vince Carter. Adding that pair of 30-somethings, plus 28-year-old backup guard Delonte West, doesn't completely fill the void, but it's a good start and an indication that Cuban remains serious about trying to defend the first title in franchise history.

"We weren't the favorites to win it last year, so nobody really knows what's going to happen," Nowitzki said. "Last year, it just worked out. The chemistry was great, guys wanted to win and play with each other. To me, the team is set up kind of the same again with a bunch of older guys that want to win, who've seen basically everything in this league and have individual (accolades) but they just want to win together and off each other."

In a 66-game season, Dallas will be hard pressed to keep up its streak of 50-win seasons. There's no telling how their aging legs will handle a schedule packed with more games and fewer off-days.

The thing is, the postseason remains the same. So this veteran group understands the ups and downs of the next four months are all about getting ready for the chase of those 16 wins that matter most.

Odom certainly understands. He spent each of the last two seasons trying to defend a championship. His Lakers did it two years ago, then were swept by the Mavs in the second round last season.

"If they thought winning a championship was hard, defending it is going to be ... it's tough," Odom said. "It changes the mindset of teams, and of your team. It's tough. But if a team can do it, this one can."

Coach Rick Carlisle considers the reinvention of this team part of the challenge of repeating.

"We've got to reformulate this thing, but the guys coming in are veteran guys and they've played in a lot of big games. ... They know what it's about," Carlisle said. "If you're a new guy coming to this team, you've got to be excited. And you've got to be trying to figure out how you're going to fit in and how you're going to help this team get in position to repeat. Hey, I like the fact our team has a different look. That's a great challenge for our coaching staff. And I think our players are energized as well."

Jason Kidd is going into the final year of his contract but is already talking about playing a few more years. Jason Terry is going into the final year of his deal, but hopes to remain with the Mavericks for the rest of his career. There's no telling what will happen in the new, post-lockout landscape, especially with Cuban letting Chandler, Barea and Butler go for the sake of gaining salary-cap flexibility.

"The way things fell was unique and you know we certainly did our homework," said Nelson, the Mavs' general manager. "We got a little lucky, which is certainly part of things, and we really feel good about this thing."

Brendan Haywood becomes the starting center, the job he was expected to have last season before Chandler arrived and proved to be a perfect fit. Third-year guard Rodrigue Beaubois could become the exciting, change-of-pace player off the bench that Barea used to be, providing he's overcome his foot injuries and learned to play enough defense to satisfy Carlisle.

All those things will fall into place over time.

For now, there's one mystery remaining. The bling.

Never one for tradition, Cuban threatened to do something other than rings. He relented, but because he decided to give players input in the design, the rings won't be ready for opening night. So there will be at least two celebrations of the title: at the opener on Christmas Day ? which just so happens to be against the Heat in an NBA finals rematch ? and again whenever the ring ceremony is held.

"We would've loved to have raised the banner and got our rings Nov. 1, but we've had this little delay," Nowitzki said. "That (opener) can't even come fast enough. We're looking forward to it so much, just to see that banner go up.

"We're going to see it there for the rest of our careers ? for the rest of our lives, really. That always means it was a special season with a bunch of guys that I loved playing with. They are always going to be like family to me, no matter where they play."

Cloud stocks jump on SAP bid for SuccessFactors (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Stocks of several cloud-computing companies rose on Monday, after German software giant SAP offered to buy Web-based software maker SuccessFactors at a high premium on Friday.

Shares of SuccessFactor's closest rival Taleo jumped by a fifth to a life-high of $39.92 in early morning trade on Nasdaq.

BMO Capital raised its rating on Taleo to "outperform" from "market perform" on Monday.

"The cloud software sector is being consolidated faster than we were expecting, and most investors will likely conclude that Taleo is the most obvious acquisition candidate and that Oracle is the most obvious buyer," it said in a research note.

The SuccessFactors acquisition will help SAP catch up with rival Oracle Corp, which recently said it would buy online customer service company RightNow Technologies Inc.

These acquisitions are expected to spur interest in the cloud technology market, which includes companies that provide sales force automation, human resources and databases.

Companies that make software to help corporations hire, train and retain employees and sell their wares online, have especially been investor favorites even during the downturn.

The near-$3 billion human resources management market is expected to grow exponentially this year as the job market changes and a younger population with very different needs enter employment.

Shares of other software-as-a-service companies, such as Cornerstone OnDemand Inc, Kenexa Corp, Ultimate Software Group Inc also rose sharply in reaction to the news.

E-commerce firm Ariba Inc and travel and expense management software maker Concur Technologies Inc (CNQR.O) were also up in early trade.

3 charged for murder plot against Swedish artist (AP)

STOCKHOLM ? Three men were charged Tuesday with plotting to stab to death a Swedish artist who has faced numerous threats from Muslim extremists for depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a dog.

The men, ages 24 to 26 and of Somali and Iraqi origin, were arrested in the city of Goteborg on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

According to the charges, the suspects were planning to use knives to kill Lars Vilks, whose 2007 drawing of Muhammad offended many Muslims and rekindled a debate over free speech and Islam that raged a year earlier when a Danish newspaper printed 12 caricatures of the prophet.

Images of Muhammad, even favorable ones, are considered blasphemous by many Muslims.

The evidence included wiretapped phone conversations between the suspects and a note pad belonging to one of them, prosecutor Agnetha Hilding Qvarnstrom said.

Calls to the suspects' defense lawyers were not immediately returned.

An art gallery celebrating the opening of an exhibition was evacuated in connection with the arrests, and police originally treated the case as a terror investigation. They later relabeled it as a murder plot.

Vilks, 65, had mentioned on his blog that he planned to visit the exhibition, but he did not attend the opening ceremony.

The three men carried knives when they were arrested near the central train station in Goteborg on Sept. 10, the charges said, adding they had scouted the art gallery and one of them had gone inside to ask for Vilks.

The Swedish artist has been at the center of several planned attacks.

A Pennsylvania woman earlier this year pleaded guilty in a plot to try to kill Vilks. Two brothers were convicted in Sweden of trying to burn down his house last year.

Also last year, a suicide bomber who blew himself up in Stockholm referred to Vilks and the presence of Swedish troops in Afghanistan in an audio recording sent to a Swedish news agency before the bombing. No one else died in the attack.

"I have had so many incidents like these now I have become accustomed to it," Vilks told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "But I have a bodyguard now so it is difficult to get to me."

The trial is expected to start later this month. Vilks said he will participate by telephone.

Rush ballot in Israel's Likud linked to U.S. outlook (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Monday for a snap leadership vote in his Likud party, a contest he is expected to win and which could pave the way for an early national election in Israel.

Some commentators said Netanyahu was quietly preparing for the possibility that President Barack Obama, with whom he has had a testy relationship, will win a second and final term in November, a year before Israel's currently scheduled ballot.

Freed of campaigning interests if he wins, the Democratic president could redouble pressure on the rightist premier to accommodate the Palestinians in peacemaking, deepening political division in Israel to the Likud's detriment, analysts predict.

"I wish to announce that I will request elections on January 31 for the leadership of the Likud and its candidate for prime minister," Netanyahu told Likud legislators at the open part of their weekly meeting in parliament.

"I want to have it now, not only to save good money for the party, but also to avoid internal anguish, so that we, as the leading party, can grapple with the issues that stand before us," he said.

Netanyahu loyalists said that by holding the leadership ballot on January 31, the party could cut costs by piggybacking on a vote set for its local lists on that date. The Likud charter requires party leadership votes to take place at least six months before national elections.

"Let's be honest, no one really thinks that the prime minister, who is really, at the end of the day, running things well, and has wall-to-wall support in the Likud, will not be elected," said Environment Minister Gilad Erdan of the Likud, whose central committee must be convened to authorize the date.

CARROT TO STICK

Hanan Krystal, Israel Radio's political analyst, said Netanyahu might also opt to bring forward the next Israeli general election, due in November 2013, should Obama look likely to beat Republican rivals in the U.S. ballot.

Resented among Jewish and conservative Christian voters over his handling of the Netanyahu government, Obama last week promoted his administration's efforts to secure Israel from foes like Iran.

"At the highest echelons, they have long been saying that if Obama is elected for a second term, the carrot will be replaced by a stick," Krystal said.

"In other words, the election of Netanyahu in January or February to head the Likud allows him to bring the (general) election forward in accordance with Obama's prospects, which are currently good," he said, adding that, if rescheduled, the national ballot would likely be held in mid-2012.

An Israeli government official said Netanyahu was keeping to the November 2013 general election date.

"There is no reason why the government should not serve its full term," the official said. "The coalition is stable."

The Likud straddles a wide conservative-religious coalition, but cracks have appeared among some of Netanyahu's key allies.

A draft corruption indictment against Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman of the far-right Israel Beiteinu could force him from office. Lawyers for Lieberman, who denies wrongdoing, are scheduled to meet Israel's attorney-general in the middle of this month in a last-ditch appeal to shelve the charges.

Another powerful coalition partner, Interior Minister Eli Yishai of the Orthodox Jewish party Shas, has been dogged by allegations of mismanaging a forest fire in northern Israel last year. A state audit on the affair is due out within months.

Netanyahu has enjoyed approval ratings of between 40 percent and 60 percent in recent months, a period in which he addressed the United Nations on his peace vision, rode out an Israeli cost-of-living protest movement, and authorized a prisoner swap with Hamas that repatriated a soldier held in Gaza for five years.

He also faces little threat from the political opposition, whose leading party, the centrist Kadima, has been riven by infighting.

Western Digital Fires Up First Flooded Factory In Thailand As Recovery Continues

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe recent floods in Thailand have wreaked devastation on the factories in the area; some were under a dozen feet or more of water, and all manner of companies were affected by the damage. Nikon and Samsung delayed cameras and a shortage of hard drives has caused a spike in prices. The recovery effort is progressing apace, and the affected areas are being pumped or drained clear of water. Power was restored in the last week in some areas and Western Digital has just turned the lights back on at one of its factories there.

Mysterious Metal Object Crashes Through Roof of Mass. Warehouse (LiveScience.com)

A three-pound piece of metal was found lying on the floor of a Massachusetts warehouse on Thursday (Dec. 1). What made this remarkable was the gaping hole discovered directly above it in the roof.

"We don't know when exactly it fell, but we found it at 11 o'clock [a.m.]," Andrew McWilliams, an employee of Michael's Wholesale Furniture Distributors in Plymouth, Mass., told Life's Little Mysteries.

The chunk of metal appears about the same size and shape as a tall, skinny soda can, but the silvery cylinder has a tarnished look to it.

The workers reported their find to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which promptly sent an inspector to investigate. All parties initially guessed that the piece of metal may have fallen off a passing plane, but the FAA later ruled out that possibility, according to CBS Boston.

"We have no idea what it is. At this point, we can only speculate. No clue," said Plymouth police Capt. John Rogers. "This would have had to come through with some significant force or velocity to get through the warehouse roof and cause damage." [See the damage]

One possibility is that the metal chunk may have fallen from space. There are approximately 20,000 bits of manmade space junk in low-Earth orbit that are as big as or bigger than the chunk that crashed through the warehouse. These usually burn up during re-entry when they fall into Earth's atmosphere, but sizable pieces occasionally make it to the ground.

McWilliams said the FAA "confiscated" the piece of debris and is continuing to investigate its source.

(AP) ? A person familiar with the negotiations says the Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with Bobby Valentine on a contract that will make him the team's new manager.

Valentine returned from a trip to Japan on Wednesday and is expected to be introduced at Fenway Park on Thursday, said the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been signed.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Valentine, 61, formerly managed the New York Mets and Texas Rangers. He replaces Terry Francona, who led the Red Sox to two World Series titles and also the biggest September collapse in baseball history.
