Bayern beats Nuremberg 1-0 to close Bundesliga gap

BERLIN (AP) -Arjen Robben earned a labored 1-0 win for Bayern Munich over Nuremberg in the 184th Bavarian derby, moving his side within three points of Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Robben scored in the 69th minute, firing to Raphael Schaefer's left after the goalkeeper saved Franck Ribery's initial effort.

Bayern is three points behind Dortmund with six rounds to play. Bayern's goal difference is seven better than Dortmund's, putting the Bavarians' league aspirations in their own hands ahead of the eagerly anticipated clash of the sides in Dortmund on April 11.

"We're not looking at Dortmund, we only want to win our own games," Bayern midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger said. "You can see the absolute determination of this team ... of course we want the title."

Bottom side Kaiserslautern looks doomed, 10 points from safety, after a 1-0 defeat at home to Hamburger SV, Cologne slipped into the relegation zone with a 2-1 defeat at Augsburg, Freiburg won 2-0 at Bayer Leverkusen, and Mainz won 3-0 at Werder Bremen.

Hertha Berlin was scheduled to host Wolfsburg later Saturday.

Bayern will meet Dortmund in the German Cup final and has one foot in the Champions League semifinal after recording a 2-0 win in Marseille in the first leg of their quarterfinal on Wednesday.

"We have it in our own hands again - indeed in all competitions," Bayern sporting director Christian Nerlinger said.

But his side's hectic schedule appears to be taking its toll as Bayern struggled to create chances against an obstinate Nuremberg side desperate for points after three losses in a row.

Robben had the best chance of the first half in the 34th minute, but the Dutchman was unable to direct his header on target.

It was the closest either side had come to scoring, with neither recording a single effort on target in the first half.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes sent on Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery early in the second half, aware of the importance of capitalizing on Dortmund's 4-4 draw with Stuttgart on Friday.

Mario Gomez was unlucky to have a goal ruled offside in the 66th, but the visitors found the breakthrough three minutes later when Toni Kroos capitalized on a Dominic Maroh mistake to send Ribery through. The Frenchman fired straight at the goalkeeper but Robben gave him no chance from the rebound.

"We'll probably play badly one day and win," said Nuremberg coach Dieter Hecking, whose side hit the post with two minutes remaining.

Marcell Jansen's 29th-minute effort was enough for Hamburg to ruin Krasimir Balakov's home debut as Kaiserslautern coach.

Kaiserslautern's chances of survival look slim after a club record 18 games without a win.

"We won't give up," Balakov said.

Freiburg inflicted Leverkusen with its fourth defeat in a row, increasing the pressure on beleaguered coach Robin Dutt through goals from Julian Schuster and a fantastic strike from Marco Caligiuri.

In Bremen, Adam Szalai scored off the underside of the crossbar in the 19th, before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting made it 2-0 after the break and then sealed the win in the 74th.

Augsburg was the only team to win at home, Axel Bellinghausen laying the ball back for Koo Ja-Cheol to deservedly score in the 19th.

Lukas Podolski equalized in the 42nd, converting a penalty he earned under Daniel Baier's clumsy challenge.

But Henrique Sereno brought Baier down at the other end a minute later and Nando Rafael converted the penalty for what proved to be the winner.

"It was a bit like Wild West football," Cologne coach Stale Solbakken said. "I'm disappointed. I take responsibility for this performance which wasn't acceptable for me. But I think I'm the right man (for the job)."

And the results seem fairly encouraging. The vast majority (over 70% of our members) say that they have at least a modest level of ownership over the support page, with 31% saying that they have gained that control within the past few years. Only 29% of members said they had little to no ownership over that page because another team is in charge of content and design changes.

LONDON -- The government of British Prime Minister David Cameron was reeling on Monday after a video emerged showing his Conservative Party's top fundraiser claiming to offer access to senior politicians in exchange for large donations.

In a sting operation, The Sunday Times (the newspaper operates behind a paywall) secretly videotaped fundraiser Peter Cruddas? discussing donations. The film showed him telling undercover reporters: "200 grand ($317,000), 250 is premier league ... it'll be awesome for your business."

If donors met Cameron, Cruddas claimed in the recording, "within that room, everything is confidential and you will be able to ask him practically any question that you want."

'We will listen to you'
He suggested they could even influence party policy, saying: "If you are unhappy about something, we will listen to you and we will put it into the policy committee at (the prime minister's official residence)."

In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain expressed the need to continue placing 'massive pressure' on Iran without resorting to military action.

Cameron responded by saying Cruddas' actions had been "completely unacceptable." Cruddas, a millionaire, resigned within hours of the report.

Obama, Cameron stand in united front

Cruddas made the remarks to two journalists he thought were international financiers and who were accompanied by a lobbyist.

Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain and President Barack Obama have a personal bond that helps define their working relationship. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

"Because we depend on donors so much we have to be careful" to show "you cannot buy access," he said according to The Sunday Times. But, he told the undercover reporters, if you donate "you could well be at a private house having a private dinner with?George Osborne, David Cameron, William Hague, the chairman around the table."

Osborne, the cabinet minister in charge of economic and financial matters, and Foreign Minister William Hague are both members of Cameron's center-right Conservative Party, which leads the governing coalition alongside the Liberal Democrats.

Embarrassing
The funding issue is embarrassing for Cameron, who promised before coming to power in May 2010 to curb corporate lobbying, saying it was the "next big scandal waiting to happen."

Following the report, Cameron admitted he had used his official home at 10 Downing Street to host dinners for Conservative donors.

Before David Cameron embarked on his trip to the United States, Brian Williams sat down with Britain's youngest prime minister in two centuries. Cameron talked about his relationship with President Obama, the war in Afghanistan and even Meryl Streep's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady. Rock Center Anchor and Managing Editor Brian Williams reports.

The scandal threatened to undo Cameron's efforts to shake off his party's image of being too close to the interests of business and the rich as Britain undergoes an austerity program to cut its budget deficit.

"This is not the way that we raise money in the Conservative party, it should not have happened," said Cameron. "I will make sure that there is a proper party inquiry to make sure this can't happen again."

While there were also tax cuts for lower earners, the government's recent budget went down badly with many Britons, giving the impression the government was looking after the wealthy and cared little for those suffering rising unemployment and falling incomes as the economy struggles to recover from recession.

Despite mounting pressure after the recent civilian killings in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain reaffirmed their plans to slowly dial back their military presence. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

Previous attempts to reform the political funding system have foundered on the Conservatives' reluctance to cap donations from wealthy individuals and the opposition Labour Party's desire to avoid limits on contributions from unions.?

Wax museum spurs sticky situation in Iraq

NAJAF, Iraq (AP) ? An exhibit of wax statues depicting some of Shiite Muslims' most beloved clerics, aimed at paying tribute to this Iraqi holy city's contributions to culture, has been dipped in controversy as some Sunnis decry the figures as heretical.

The wax sculptures are due to be displayed at a museum in Najaf, but even before the exhibit opens, some Sunni Muslims ? rarely shy about highlighting their religious differences with Shiites ? are denouncing them as a violation of Islamic law. Even some Shiite clerics are a bit leery.

"Even those dead people whose statues are displayed (would have) disapproved of this," said Ali Bashir al-Najafi, a spokesman for one of Iraq's top Shiite clerics.

Some Muslim clerics of both sects interpret Islamic law as forbidding most depictions of people and even animals in art or other likenesses. They believe such likenesses could be perceived as false idols and, therefore, taboo.

The wax figures portray bearded clerics in turbans and politicians in freshly ironed suits. They include Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Sadiq al-Sadr, who was beloved by Iraq's Shiites for encouraging Friday prayers during Saddam Hussein's regime. He was assassinated by Saddam's agents in 1999. Also depicted is Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, who was born in Najaf and was Lebanon's top Shiite cleric until his death in 2010.

All of the figures were either born, studied or buried in Najaf, located 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Baghdad. The city of roughly one million people is home to Iraq's religious Shiite leadership, called the marjaiyah, and holds the tomb of Imam Ali, who Shiites consider the Prophet Muhammed's rightful successor.

The exhibit is the brainchild of Sheik Ali Mirza, a Shiite cleric. He said he was inspired during a visit to a wax museum in Beirut that included a likeness of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Mirza said the figures in Najaf are so lifelike visitors sometimes "raise their hands to salute the statues as if they were alive." He said the statues are all Shiite because the exhibit will be in Najaf, which he called "the Vatican of Shiite Muslims."

The wax figures were originally intended to be part of festivities connected to the city being named the 2012 Islamic Capital of Culture. But the cultural arm of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation ? the grouping of Islamic nations once known as the Organization of the Islamic Conference ? announced recently that the festival has been canceled at the Iraqi government's request.

The event had already been beset by accusations of mismanagement and corruption. But the wax figures are not going to just melt away. Officials said the figures will still be displayed at a Najaf museum.

The cleric knows the likenesses won't be to everybody's liking.

"The museum is a new idea and people need time to get used to it," he said.

But some in Iraq's Sunni minority are not getting used to it, reflecting the religious divide that is never far from the surface here. Even more so than Shiism, Sunni Islam has historically frowned on depictions of the human form. Many Iraqi Sunnis look down on the country's Shiite majority because they allow depictions of Muslim figures in banners, flags or other religious paraphernalia. For Sunni extremists, this is just further proof of their accusation that Shiites are not true Muslims.

Sunni extremists have sharply criticized the statues and Shiites who visit them.

"Believe it or not: wax museum for the turbaned in Najaf," sneered a headline on one Sunni website.

"Idols reached Najaf," thundered another.

"The pre-Islam era of paganism is returning," warned a comment on another website.

A leading Sunni cleric was more diplomatic.

"It is not right to erect statues whether made of wax or of anything else. That is haram (religiously forbidden) because it is an emulation of God's creation," said Sheik Ahmed al-Taha who is the preacher of the Abu Hanifa mosque in Baghdad, a key Sunni house of worship. "It is similar to what heathens do."

Some Shiites are also uneasy. While Shiism allows more latitude for the depiction of faces or busts, the full-body wax figures are for many a step too far. Al-Najafi said it is OK to have half a statue but not the full body.

The hardline Shiite movement known as the Sadrists, followers of the late ayatollah, want the statue of al-Sadr taken down.

"The people behind this museum bear the responsibility before God," said Hakim al-Zamili, a senior Sadrist lawmaker.

Mirza is careful not to speak against the marjaiyah, whose edicts are practically law in this Shiite majority country. But he points out that various Shiite clerics have different ideas about the statues' appropriateness.

The statues have already become a hit with some Shiites. Curious onlookers have flocked to a religious school owned by Mirza where the statues are being kept until the museum opens.

"I am very impressed. I did not expect something like this. They seem so real," one visiting cleric, Sheik Muhsen al-Najafi, told Mirza during a visit.

An activist in Najaf, Qassim Abdul-Sadda, said he was not very religious but went to see the wax statues about a month ago out of curiosity.

He took pictures of himself next to the statues and posted them on the Internet. When some of his friends realized they were wax figures, they called the statues "haram," he said.

But he likes them.

"It is good to preserve the heritage of Najaf in this way by showing this generation and generations to come the scholars who had a great contribution to the history and culture of Najaf," he said.

The presale for Nicki's Oslo, Norway, date began Monday, and tickets to the Stockholm show will be pre-sold Tuesday. Tickets for subsequent shows will go on sale in the coming weeks.

The Harajuku Barbie's sophomore LP Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is scheduled to be released on April 3. On Friday, Nicki released the track list for the album and revealed collaborations with Chris Brown, Nas, Cam'ron, Rick Ross and of course her Young Money cohorts Lil Wayne and Drake.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Walter Offutt got a taste for what it was like to beat Michigan while he was at Ohio State. Clinching an upset win for Ohio over the Wolverines in the NCAA tournament is just a bit sweeter.

Offutt, who ended up at Ohio by way of Wright State, grabbed a loose ball, was fouled by Evan Smotrycz and sank both of his free throws with 6.8 seconds left to preserve Ohio's 65-60 upset of Michigan on Friday night in the second round of the NCAA tournament's Midwest Regional.

"It's been an amazing journey," Offutt said. "Probably the best thing that ever happened in my life."

The No. 13 Bobcats have had quite the season, winning the Mid-American Conference tournament and a program-record 28 victories. There's still time for more great things, starting with a game against No. 12 seed South Florida on Sunday.

"We're playing our best basketball of the year, no doubt about that," said Ohio coach John Groce, whose 2009-10 Bobcats squad upset third-seeded Georgetown.

Ohio had the Wolverines on their heels throughout the game, but Michigan's Trey Burke hit a 3 with 4:12 left to cut it to 63-60. But the Wolverines missed their final five shots, including four by the freshman Burke.

"We were really emphasizing (that) this doesn't have to be a 3-point game," Michigan coach John Beilein said. "Could we have gotten more open (shots)? Well, time would have told, but those were the choices he made, and we live with them."

On Burke's third miss, fourth-seeded Michigan (24-10) got the rebound but Smotrycz lost control of the ball in front of the Wolverines bench, and Offutt grabbed it.

The teams traded the lead three times and were tied a fourth time when Baltic spun around in the lane and hit a jumper that launched a 15-2 run for Ohio. Nick Kellogg was left open and sank a 3-pointer that made it 35-22 with 2:49 in the first half.

The Bobcats smothered the Wolverines' perimeter shooting and dared them to go inside. Even though Michigan was the smaller of the two teams, it outscored Ohio in the paint 16-12 in the first half.

Hardaway Jr. managed to get 10 points by halftime, but Zack Novak, Stu Douglass and Burke, who together average 31.9 points per game, combined for just seven points.

The loss is just another NCAA disappointment for a Michigan program that hasn't been to the round of 16 since 1994. The Wolverines are 3-9 in tournament games since then.

But it especially hurts for seniors Douglass and Novak, who helped lead the team to a three-way tie with Ohio State and Michigan State for the Big Ten regular-season championship.

"I haven't cried over a basketball game since I got knocked out in high school," said Douglass, whose 136 career games is a record for Michigan. "So that kind of paints the picture for you."
