Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012)

The MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012) ($1,199 direct) is thin, light, and has a decent battery capacity. A whole new category of laptops, the ultrabooks, have become popular based on Apple's pioneering efforts. For Mid 2012, Apple has updated its system with a new Ivy Bridge processor from Intel. There are other new features, like USB 3.0 ports and the potential upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. If your MacBook Air is less than a year old, you can skip this generation because the Ivy Bridge processor is only a slight speed bump over the last generation. However, if you're running an older MacBook (of any kind) with a Core 2 Duo or Quad processor, now is the time to upgrade. An Ivy Bridge processor in the new MacBook Air 13-inch, with a $100 price drop? That's a pretty good deal.

Design and Features
The new MacBook Air looks very much like the previous model, the MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,299 direct, 4 stars). It has the same wedge-shaped chassis that tapers almost to a sharp point. It even weighs the same as the previous iteration, at 2.85 pounds, like the previous mode. The screen is a 13.3-inch widescreen display with a 1,440 by 900 resolution. This is the same resolution as the previous two generations of 13-inch MacBook Air systems. For the time being, Retina Display is limited to the new MacBook Pro. The screen is still bright and clear, though, and should keep most users happy.

The system has the same unibody aluminum body, silver bezel around the screen, and a similar set of physical ports on the sides (with a couple exceptions). The new MacBook Air uses a MagSafe2 power connector that is shorter and wider than original MagSafe connector. The MacBook Air's 45W MagSafe 2 AC adapter has a T-shaped connector; hopefully, Apple has corrected the problems that led to frayed MagSafe cords in the late 2000s. MagSafe and MagSafe 2 are physically different connectors, so current Apple display users or users with spare MagSafe adapters lying around will need a MagSafe to MagSafe 2 adapter from Apple (a $9.99 option). The two USB ports are now USB 3.0, which are much faster than the previous USB 2.0 connectors. Of course, USB 2.0 (and USB 1.1/1.0) devices will still work with the USB 3.0 ports, though the transfer speeds will not be as fast as USB 3.0. The Thunderbolt connector, headphone, SDXC slot, and microphone carry over from the previous MacBook Air.

One thing missing is an HDMI port. Most of the MacBook Air's competition in the ultrabook space comes with one, and using a standard HDMI port is more convenient than trying to find a Thunderbolt display or a mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter. Apple would have to relocate the SDXC slot or remove it entirely, but adding HDMI would be worth it.

Typing on the MacBook Air's keyboard was the same as the older model, with the same somewhat shallow key travel. You'll need to get used to it if you're switching from a desktop keyboard, but it's otherwise as comfortable to use as the previous MacBook Air. The large multi-touch trackpad also carries over the same gestures and reacts just as smoothly.

The base configuration of the new 13-inch MacBook Air comes with 4GB of system memory (as much as before, though now it's 1,600MHz DDR3), and the processor is upgraded from a 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-2557M (Sandy Bridge) processor to a 1.8GHz Intel Core i5-3427U (Ivy Bridge) processor. In addition to the slight speed bump, the processor includes Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics with DX11 support. Weight remains just under 3 pounds, and the same 50WHr battery powers the whole shebang. The system's 128GB flash storage helps it start up, launch apps, and go to sleep mode quickly, taking only a couple of seconds to do either operation. Upgrades to 256GB and the pricey new option for 512GB flash storage can be configured on Apple's Website for quite a bit of money ($300 more than base price for 256GB and $800 more for 512GB). Upgrades to a 2GHz Core i7 processor and up to 8GB are some of the system's few other options. The system ships with Mac OS X Lion (10.7.4), but under OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) the MacBook Air will be able to use Power Sleep. Power Sleep will continue to update compatible info (like Facebook, email, and messages) while the system is sleeping. The OS X Mountain Lion will be a free upgrade when the updated operating system is released in July 2012.

The MacBook Air 13-inch comes with the usual set of iLife apps, like GarageBand, iTunes, iMovie, and iPhoto. FaceTime is currently a Mac-to-Mac program, but the Mountain Lion update will allow Mac to iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPad) video conferencing. Aside from iLife and the apps built into Mac OS X, the system's flash memory is free, which means there's no bloatware and therefore more room for your stuff.

Performance
The MacBook Air uses Intel's new Core i5-3427U processor, which is one of the new Ivy Bridge processors made to work in compact, speedy laptops like the MacBook Air and Ultrabooks. The new MacBook Air is able to complete the Cinebench R11.5 test with a 2.61 CPU score, which is better than the 2.17 score on the previous Air. This is also better than a recently tested Ultrabook with a slightly slower Ivy Bridge processor, the Sony VAIO T13 (SVT13112FXS) ($799.99 direct, 4 stars) which came in at 2.32 CPU score on Cinebench. The MacBook Air also garnered a good 2:42 time on our Handbrake video test and 4:53 on our Photoshop CS5 test. Media scores are similar to the previous MacBook Air, at least in Photoshop (2:09 Handbrake, 4:55 CS5).

The new Intel Core i5-3427U is an ultra-low voltage CPU, with an extremely low 17W TDP. There's a smidge of increased performance over the last MacBook Air, but remember that it has only an extra 100MHz of base clock speed with the same amount of L3 cache (3MB). The system that's close in spirit and attitude to the MacBook Air is the HP Envy 14 Spectre ($1,399.99 direct, 4 stars), and it performs in the same ballpark (2:31 Handbrake, 5:25 CS5). All of these systems have similar screen sizes/resolutions, processor speeds, and all use flash storage either as primary or cache storage. As far as battery life and 3D is concerned, we couldn't run our usual MobileMark test and 3D tests on the new MacBook Air because at the time of this review Apple had not yet released Boot Camp Windows drivers for the system. Stay tuned for updated benchmark tests after that happens. Using our ten-hour video rundown test, run in Mac OS X,with the backlight set to 50 percent and Wi-Fi and keyboard backlight both activated, we were able to manage about 7 hours (6 hours 56 minutes) matching Apple's claims for battery life on its wireless Web test using the system's 50Wh internal battery.

Compared to the competition, the MacBook Air remains a good choice after its Ivy Bridge update. While it's not a "must upgrade" if you have the previous MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) with a Sandy Bridge processor, folks that continuously trade up will find a few improvements like the USB 3.0 ports, and updated CPU and faster memory, at $100 less than the previous model. If you're still rocking a Core 2 Duo-equipped MacBook Air without Thunderbolt, you'll welcome the higher resolution screen and Core i5 processor. The MacBook Air continues to hold its own against competitors like the HP Envy 14 Spectre, since that system is loaded with bloatware, which takes up a lot of space on its 128GB SSD. The Editor's Choice HP Folio 13-1020us ($899.99 list, 4 stars) also comes loaded with bloatware, but gets to hold on to its ultrabook crown, mainly due to its more reasonable price tag, HDMI and Ethernet ports, and class leading battery life that's just shy of 9 hours.

Cave art sparks a Neanderthal mystery

Rodrigo De Balbin Behrmann

A researcher from the University of Bristol removes samples from Tito Bustillo Cave in Spain. The stalactite is painted with a red figure that dates back 29,000 to 36,000 years.

By Alan Boyle

When archaeologists tried out a new technique to determine the age of Spain's most famous Paleolithic cave paintings, they were surprised to discover that the paintings were thousands of years older than previously thought?? so old that it's conceivable they were painted by Neanderthals.

The technique just might change the way we think about the paintings, and the way we think about our long-extinct, long-maligned Neanderthal cousins as well.?

"Neanderthals, of course, have had this bad press for a long time," the University of Barcelona's Joao Zilhao, a member of the research team, told reporters. "But the research developments over the last decade have shown that this is probably not deserved."

The findings being reported today represent just an initial step in an "ongoing program" to date hundreds of European cave paintings more accurately, said the University of Bristol's Alistair Pike, lead author of a paper published in the journal Science. It's still too early to say conclusively whether Neanderthals were behind at least some of the artistry. However, Pike and his colleagues are confident that the earliest paintings go back at least 40,800 years. That time frame matches up with the earliest evidence of the presence of anatomically modern humans in Europe. It's also thousands of years earlier than the previously accepted maximum age, based on carbon dating.

"We were not expecting these results," Zilhao said. "When we put this project together, the idea was to improve the chronology of rock art, and particularly in the case of Spain."

Penn State archaeologist Dean Snow, who wasn't part of the research team but has worked on some of the same cave paintings that were recently put to the test, was impressed by the results. "The basic findings are the sorts of things you could take to the bank," he told me.?But he also acknowledged that the latest findings produce "three or four new problems that we didn't have before."

"Now, with these older dates, we have to entertain the possibility that there might have been some Neanderthal involvement in some of these paintings," Snow said. "We've never really seriously considered that before."

Pedro Saura

Hand stencils and the outlines of animals dominate "The Panel of Hands" in Spain's El Castillo cave. One of the stencils has been dated to earlier than 37,300 years ago, and a red disk goes back at least 40,800 years, making them the oldest cave paintings in Europe.

Rodrigo De Balbin Behrmann

Six-foot (2-meter) paintings of horses in Spain's Tito Bustillo Cave overlay earlier red paintings that, from dating elsewhere in the cave, might be older than 29,000 years.

How the tests were done
The tests were conducted on 50 Paleolithic paintings in 11 Spanish caves, including the famous pictures of horses and human hands at the Altamira and El Castillo caves. In the past, the paintings have been dated using radiocarbon tests, but Pike's team used a different technique that analyzed the proportions of uranium, thorium and related elements in the calcite deposits that formed above and below the paintings. Those proportions vary over time, due to radioactive decay, and can tell you how long it's been since the calcite was formed.

That's an interesting approach for several reasons: First, the scientists don't have to depend on getting a reading from the paint itself, which may be contaminated or may not even be amenable to carbon dating. Also, the calcite deposits are scraped away, using a knife or a drill, until the pigment just begins to appear beneath it. "That does two things," Pike explained. "It means we stop before we damage the painting, and secondly it proves to us and our audience that these things are directly above the art itself."

The scientists can thus be confident that the age they get will be the minimum age for the artwork. In some cases, the scientists could sample flowstone deposits beneath the layer of paint to get a maximum age as well.

The tests took advantage of the state of the art in mass spectrometry, which means the scientists didn't require much of a sample. The scrapings amounted to as little as 10 milligrams, which is about the weight of a grain of rice. "Perhaps 20 years ago, we would have needed a whole gram of material, and now we need one-hundredth of that size," Pike said.

That minimizes the impact on the caves, which is a sensitive topic for the officials in charge of the caves.?"Getting permission to work in a cave is really difficult," Snow explained. "The bureaucratic and political difficulties of getting this work done are substantial."

Pike and his colleagues pioneered this process years ago, in a project aimed at verifying the dates for 12,800-year-old cave engravings in England's Creswell Crags, but the tests reported today represent the highest-profile application of what's known as uranium-series disequilibrium dating.

What the tests found
The uranium tests, like previous radiocarbon tests, showed that there was wide variation in the age of the paintings. The El Castillo paintings yielded a time frame stretching from 22,600 years ago all the way back to at least 40,800 years ago. That farthest-back age is particularly telling. Previously, archaeologists had thought the paintings went back to about 38,000 years. The new tests push the age back to near the time when modern humans were first thought to have inhabited the area, around 42,000 years ago.

Pike said that raises three scenarios: El Castillo's modern humans might have developed their cave-painting skills during their migration out of Africa, and put it to use when they arrived in Europe. After all, communities of Homo sapiens who lived in Africa and the Near East showed evidence of artistic behavior going back as far as 75,000 to 100,000 years. Another possibility is that humans started painting cave walls soon after their arrival in Europe ? perhaps as the result of cultural competition with the native Neanderthals, who are known to have inhabited the region as far back as 250,000 years ago. Or the Neanderthals themselves could have created the first paintings, and Homo sapiens picked up the artistic habit while Homo neanderthalensis faded away.

Pedro Saura

The "Corredor de los Puntos" lies within Spain's El Castillo cave. Red disks here have been dated to between 34,000 and 36,000 years ago, and elsewhere in the cave to 40,800 years ago, making them examples of Europe's earliest cave art.

Zilhao said the Neanderthal vs. Homo sapiens debate could shed light on the roots of our own culture. "Cave painting is of course one of the most exquisite examples of human symbolic behavior," he said. "And that's what makes us human."

Although cave art has not previously been linked to the Neanderthals, Zilhao pointed out that the past few years have provided ample evidence that the species had an artistic bent. In 2010, he led a research team and fellow researchers suggested that Neanderthal cave-dwellers wore ornaments and painted their bodies with mineral-based pigments. Other researchers have found a perforated bear bone that may or may not have been shaped as a flute for Neanderthals, as well as bird feathers that may have been used as Neanderthal ritual objects or fashion statements.

Pike et al. via Science

This hand stencil in Spain's El Castillo cave dates back at least 37,300 years, based on uranium-series testing, and could conceivably show a Neanderthal hand outline.

The researchers noted that the earliest paintings were not figurative works, but instead reflected simpler motifs such as dots, disks and lines. For example, the 40,800-year-old painting in the El Castillo cave was a large red disk, probably created by blowing pigment onto the rock surface. Nearby, there was the red outline of a hand, most likely made by placing the hand on the rock and blowing pigment over it. That stencil was found to be at least 37,300 years old.

"What's really exciting about the possibility that this is Neanderthal art is that anyone, because it's open to the public, can walk into El Castillo cave and they can see a Neanderthal hand on the wall," Pike said.

Just how possible is that?

"In probabilistic terms, I would say there is a strong chance that these results imply Neanderthal authorship," Zilhao said. "But I will not say we have proven it, because we haven't, and it cannot be proven at this time. It's just, you know, my gut feeling."

What lies ahead
Pike said further tests would show whether Zilhao's gut feeling was correct.

"I think it's a fairly straightforward thing to prove if they were painted by Neanderthals. ... All we have to do is go back and date more of these samples, and find a date that predates the arrival of modern humans in Europe," he told me.

The research team is currently concentrating on hand stencils and red disks, which appear to be the oldest types of cave paintings in Spain. If the minimum dates turn out to be significantly older than 42,000 years, that would be strong evidence that Neanderthals were involved, Pike said.

Snow said the big issue with uranium-series dating has to do with the accuracy of the process. "You've got to have measurement capabilities that are really, really precise," he said. "They can't tolerate anything like the kind of sloppiness and standard error that we had to tolerate in the past, using carbon dates."

He said it was a good sign that the research team ran multiple tests on succeeding layers of calcite and got back results that showed a consistent progression of dates. This suggests that uranium-series dating can go back to time frames where carbon dating becomes less reliable. "For the profession, part of the excitement is going to be that we've got some technologies that are going to be viable for sites in the 30,000- to 50,000-year range," Snow told me.

Zilhao said the research could eventually smash our stereotypical view of the Neanderthal tribe ??which died out more than 20,000 years ago. Scientists suspect that the Neanderthals fell victim to competition with us Homo sapiens types,?but they also have found that the species?contributed to our genetic heritage through interbreeding.

"This evidence is, at least to my mind, sufficient for us to think about Neanderthals as fundamentally human beings that were simply, if you want, racially distinct. This is quite visible in aspects of their skeletons," Zilhao said. "What will change with the demonstration, if it comes, that Neanderthals were also the first cave artists? I guess [it would be] corroboration of the already-existing evidence, and perhaps if you want a catchphrase, the last nail in the coffin of the notion of Neanderthals as the archetypal 'dumb.'"

More about ancient cave art:

In addition to Pike and Zilhao, the authors of "U-Series Dating of Paleolithic Art in 11 Caves in Spain" include D.L. Hoffmann, M. Garcia-Diez, P.B. Pettitt, J. Alcolea, R. De Balbin, C. Gonzalez-Sainz, C. de las Heras, J.A. Lasheras and R. Montes. The 11 caves that were sampled are Pedroses, Tito Bustillo, Las Aguas, Altamira, Santian, El Pendo, El Castillo, La Pasiega, Las Chimeneas, Covalanas and La Haza.

Three UK offers flat-rate plan for unlimited European data roaming

Three offers European flatrate

Three UK is doing its best to stop you getting bill shock on your holidays by introducing a flat rate for European data roaming. The Euro Internet Pass will allow users to consume unlimited information in any "supported country" on the continent for £5 ($8) per day. Users can start using the plan from today, simply by texting the operator when you arrive at your destination, flip-flops in hand. There are some caveats however, the allocation lasts until midnight UK time, streaming probably won't work and you aren't allowed to use tethering -- your office will just have to struggle on without you.

Study leads to introduction of rapid syphilis tests to help pregnant women and babies

Pregnant women are benefiting from new rapid tests for syphilis in six countries thanks to influential research by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

The study, published today in PLoS Medicine, was so successful that it resulted in China, Peru, Brazil, Zambia, Uganda and Tanzania introducing the tests to help save the lives of unborn children before the research was published, demonstrating the value of including policymakers throughout the process.

The research, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, sought to determine the feasibility of introducing new point-of-care-tests for pre-natal syphilis screening into a range of different countries. The project has shown that these new simple tests can be effectively introduced into a range of locations, from urban areas in China and Peru, to remote villages in East Africa, and even more remote indigenous populations deep in the Amazon rain forest - and that the lives of up to one million children could be saved every year if they were rolled out globally.

It is estimated that two million pregnant women are infected with syphilis every year and that over half of these pass it on to their unborn child during their pregnancy. If untreated during pregnancy, syphilis is associated with spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, premature delivery, low birth weight, and perinatal death. In Africa alone, syphilis causes almost 400,000 stillbirths and newborn deaths a year.

Lead author Professor Rosanna Peeling, of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "By working closely with each of the governments prior to and during the research, we've been able to bring about rapid changes in policy within each of the countries. This has happened remarkably quickly, given that the project was only completed in 2011.

"We hope that the clear results of working closely with governments and decision-makers from an early stage in our project may lead to other similar studies being given high priority within the health system in future, thus overcoming the well-known lag between research and action through policy change."

Unlike conventional syphilis tests, the rapid syphilis test used in the research requires minimal training, can be used on whole blood, plasma, or serum, and does not require laboratory equipment, cold storage, or electricity.

Professor David Mabey, also of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and one of the key authors of the study, said: "Policies for screening pregnant mothers for syphilis have been in place in most countries for years, yet over 70% of pregnant women with syphilis are not screened. This is, in part, due to logistical challenges with current testing methods, which require electricity, refrigeration and laboratory equipment.

"There has been significant progress in reducing mortality in under-fives, but the number of newborn babies who die in their first month of life is not declining. 2015 is only three years away and many countries will not achieve Millennium Development Goal 4 unless they can reduce neonatal mortality rates. Syphilis is one of the major causes of stillbirths and newborn deaths, yet it can be treated easily and cheaply if detected early enough.

"Screening pregnant women for syphilis is one of the most cost-effective health interventions available. If all pregnant women were screened, and those who tested positive were treated with one dose of penicillin before 28 weeks' gestation, no stillbirths or neonatal deaths would be due to syphilis. It's as simple as that. These new rapid tests are easy to use, affordable and give a result in just 15 minutes at the cost of less than 1 per women screened."

As a result of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine study, the Ministry of Health in Brazil announced that syphilis screening for remote populations who previously have never had access to it would be one of the three main priorities for the national programme for the control of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections. In Peru, the Ministry of Health announced they would be rolling out rapid syphilis tests for pregnant women, with the aim of reducing the incidence of congenital syphilis from 1.7% to 0.5% per 1000 people by 2015.

In Uganda and Zambia, findings from the study were presented to the Ministries of Health, which now both incorporate rapid syphilis testing in their standard package of PMTCT (Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission) services and antenatal care. In Zambia, the Ministry of Health, with support from the Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS Foundation, is procuring Point-Of-Care-Tests (POCTs) for syphilis and supporting national trainers as part of a national rollout plan to support rapid syphilis testing of pregnant women across the country.

In addition, on the back of the study's findings, the Global Congenital Syphilis Partnership was launched in March. The partnership seeks to build on the success of the project by expanding strategic partnerships, strengthening global advocacy and supporting the implementation of Point-of-Care tests for syphilis. Members of the group include London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Save the Children, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, University College London, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

NuSTAR space telescope set to search for black holes

A once-canceled space telescope is set to launch into Earth orbit, where it will search for undiscovered black holes in the Milky Way and at the hearts of other galaxies.

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array will hunt for black holes that have been obscured by the dust and gas floating through space and measure how fast some of them are spinning. NuSTAR will also examine with fresh eyes the remnants of exploded stars known as supernovae.

"It's a very exciting mission," said Roger Blandford, director of the Kavli Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University and a member of the NuSTAR science team. "It opens up a new window on the universe."

Black holes, supernovae and other cosmic sources can give off light across the whole electromagnetic spectrum, from low-energy infrared waves to high-energy gamma radiation. But much of that light is invisible even to the Hubble Space Telescope and the ChandraX-rayObservatory, which are focused on the infrared, visible, ultraviolet and low-energyX-rayportions of the spectrum.

In addition, much of the lower-energy light gets absorbed by gas and dust floating through space, essentially blocking these objects from view.

NuSTAR will capture high-energyX-raysemanating from these cosmic bodies. But it's hard for instruments to detect the rays directly ? they tend to go straight through. These are, after all, the same kind of X-rays dentists use to penetrate your skin and take images of your teeth, explained Caltech astrophysicist Fiona Harrison, the mission's principal investigator.

To catch these X-rays, NuSTAR will position its highly reflective mirrors at an angle that's almost parallel to incoming light. That way, when an X-ray hits the mirrors at such a glancing angle, it can then be bounced right into the detector, about 30 feet away at the end of a mast.

The steep angle reduces the amount of light that can be captured, so to compensate, NuSTAR's mirrors are arranged in 133 conical nested shells, like so many Russian dolls.

Older focusing X-ray telescopes could capture light at energies as high as about 15 kiloelectron volts; NuSTAR will go even higher, up to 79 KeV.

By examining how black holes grow, NuSTAR will help astrophysicists understand the growth of galaxies, said Martin Elvis, a scientist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, who was not involved in planning the mission.

With its special ability to focus high-energy X-rays, the telescope will be able to explore a variety of other X-ray sources, including neutron stars and the processes that superheat the halo of particles around the sun, known as the corona.

Wednesday's scheduled NuSTAR launch comes just days short of the 50th anniversary of X-ray astronomy, Elvis said. It's also a time when tight budgets have kept NASA from embarking on major long-term projects for X-ray astronomy.

NuSTAR, which is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada Flintridge, is part of NASA's Small Explorer program, missions designed to do more with less. With a price tag of $165 million, the two-year mission costs about one-tenth as much as building Chandra did.

The telescope will be launched from a plane in midair, rather than straight from the ground, to limit fuel costs. The plane is scheduled to take off from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands at 8:30 a.m.

But even these modest missions are not safe from budget cuts. Last week, NASA announced that it had cut the Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer for cost reasons.

NuSTAR was canceled in 2006 because of funding pressures within NASA. It was reinstated in 2007.

Small Business Ownership: Side effects may include headaches ...

Are you frequently stressed or fearful about your small business? Then you?re not alone.

In February, 2012, polling firm Populus interviewed 500 small business leaders in the U.S. to find out how work stress was affecting their health. They found that the stress of owning and leading a business can take a toll on business owners? mental and physical well-being.

A similar study released in May by the Bank of America found that maintaining a small business causes owners twice the stress as maintaining a healthy spouse or partner relationship, nearly three times the stress of raising children, and more than four times the stress of maintaining personal finances. Participants also indicated that 57% had sacrificed time for themselves for the sake of the small business, and 37% had sacrificed keeping physically fit.

Here are some highlights from Populus? findings:

  • 43% of small business leaders feel more stressed than a year ago
  • 75% reported recurring ailments at work, the most common being lack of energy, anxious thoughts, headaches, and back pain
  • Their workday increased by an average of 4 minutes in the last year
  • 43% say that their business faces more risks than it did a year ago
  • Only 46% say that they plan to definitely plan to take a holiday or vacation in the next year, while 19% say that they will definitely not take a vacation, and 35% are either uncertain or plan to bring work along on their vacation
  • The top three reasons for work-related stress were the fears of losing their business altogether (54% of participants), repaying personal debt, and the risk of losing clients
  • Participants cite ?working harder to service current clients? as the top reason for working more hours in the past year

One bright spot in the two studies is the sense of optimism that small business owners feel about the future:

  • 53% say that they feel confident about the prospects for their business in the next year
  • 57% say that they think their company will grow in the next year
  • The top business challenges they expected to face over the next year were: loss of customers, customer loyalty/retention, improving business performance, and political uncertainty
  • The Bank of America study found that 42% of participants expect their own local economic conditions to improve over the next year, but cited the effectiveness of U.S. government as their number one national concern

If this all sounds familiar, then it may be time to take a step back and find ways to put your well-being first. If your health suffers, your business ultimately will in return. Although putting aside ?me? time may seem daunting, it?s important to schedule time to exercise and to relax and nurture relationships in order to prevent burnout. Learn to delegate. Even small breaks during the day, such as taking a short walk or stopping to read a chapter of a novel, can give your brain and body the important refreshment they need to function productively.

Have you experienced this kind of stress and subsequent side effects, and how do you deal with us? Come find us and discuss on Twitter (@DwyerGroup) or Facebook (www.facebook.com/thedwyergroup).

DIE THE WAY YOU WANT TO | VIEW FROM 80

This week I completed a six weeks grief group at a nearby church, using the book my brothers and I wrote, Dear Brothers: Letters Facing Death. At our last session we discussed final wishes about our death, incluiding? how and where we wanted to die. One of the group refused to attend this session, still locked??into denial about her death. Other groups members shared how difficult it was to discuss their wishes with their adult children who avoided any discussion of the subject like the plague. However, medicine is so good now in keeping people alive that we must increasingly choose how and where we will die. Will we choose to die in a hospital with bleeping machines and blinking montitor. or die at home with hospice care that can blunt the fear and pain of these final hours? My mother died in?a ?nursing home, ?only a few days after she was admitted there. She was able to remain at home during a long struggle with Parkinson?s dementia, before my faher and sister had to place her in a nursing home. My father preached a sermon on ?Have?A ?Good Day,? and died a few days later from a massive coronary. Thus he was spared the agony of a long drawn out struggle. Recently I visited a dying man whose wish was to die at home. The family had placed him on a bed in the parlor,as if on display, and family members and an ?endless stream of visitors hovered over him before he breathed his last. I recall another man who was dying at home, and asked his wife to call certain friends to come so he could say goodbye to then. Martin Luther said, ?Every person must live their own life, and die their own death.? Death is private and personal. the point is that we need to state clearly what our wishes are for how and where we die so that we may leave this earth with dignity. (To be continued)
