Elder Care Questions in Burlington City, NJ: What is Parkinson's ...

For those involved in?elder care, either as an occupation or out of respect for the needs of a loved one, the subject of?Parkinson?s Disease?may become part of their daily vernacular. As the second most common neuro-degenerative disorder in the United States, Parkinson?s Disease is most common among the 50 years of age and older population. With that said, it is also important to note that this debilitating disease process can begin in people as young as 30 years of age.

Early Signs and Symptoms

Early signs of the disease process include loss of coordination, muscle stiffness, weakened voice, tremors and loss of sexual function (in men). For many patients, the neuro-degeneration caused by Parkinson?s Disease can proceed slowly for the rest of their lifespan, meaning that, while these symptoms may not improve, they will not grow noticeably worse in a rapid time-frame. Fortunately, this means that a large percentage of Parkinson?s Disease patients will require limited?elder care?services beyond basic in-home care or the assistance of a private caregiver to successfully live at home with the disease.

Elder Care and Parkinson?s Disease

As caregivers, there are a few things that can be done to assist patients suffering from Parkinson?s Disease. Physical therapy, especially during the early and middle stages of the degenerative process, may be extremely helpful in maintaining the patient?s range of motion and flexibility, thus prolonging the painful stiffening of the joints and other debilitating effects of the disease. Some patients also respond well to vitamin supplement and drug therapies to reduce or slow the progress of pain, inflammation and other symptoms of the disease process. In the later stages of the process, a patient may become more reliant upon the assistance of others to accomplish basic tasks, such as shaving, brushing of teeth or bathing. Unfortunately, due to degeneration of cognitive and sensory functions, the patient may not recognize the need for added assistance so it falls to the caregiver to decide when the extra help is appropriate.

While the physical effects of Parkinson?s Disease can be devastating, the non-motor function effects of the degeneration process are often the most troubling for patients, family members and the?elder care?team that is trying to provide needed support. As a neuro-degenerative process, Parkinson?s disease can cause patients to suffer from depression and anxiety. The disease can also cause normally fluent speakers to lose their train of thought or develop a twitch during conversations, which makes communication difficult. Caregivers can assist the patient by displaying patience and empathy in these situations, as well as redirecting the patient when lessened cognitive function is causing them to make dangerous decisions.

By providing for the patients physical and mental needs, caregivers can ensure that those suffering from Parkinson?s Disease can continue to live a full and well-adapted life at home or in assisted living.

Assisted Living At Home is an elder care company servicing Burlington County, Camden County and Gloucester County with a primary focus on care for Alzheimer?s/dementia care for individuals in their home. For more information about elder care, call us at (856) 432-2602.

Tired of Tiptoeing Around Your Fears? - Health and Beauty is Yours

Tired of Tiptoeing Around Your Fears?Reviewed by Arieftheo on Oct 28Rating:

Tired of Tiptoeing Around Your Fears?Click Image To Visit SiteIn as little as 10 minutes a day, you could be free of your phobia, the intense fear that has been crippling your life.

My name is Jan Heering, and as the Founder and President of Amsterdam?s Morpheus Institute, as well as a phobia treatment expert, mental coach, psychological trainer and author, I assure you that you can free yourself of this damaging disorder.

BEFORE? I had this great fear of bugs and spiders, which made me have constant fears. I always felt that a creepy crawly was near me and this feeling itself was enough to send shivers down my spine. Sighting a bug or spider would make me scream like mad. AFTER? The constant fear of bugs and spiders is completely gone. I am much more relaxed today without this constant problem bugging me. I am well in control of my feelings and loving the way my life is now.

BEFORE? I had fears that were unwarranted. This was a real setback in life, holding me back from opportunities in life. The confidence level just was down for me. AFTER? I am in well control of my life now with no unwarranted fears. I look at life from a positive angle now.

"Your Phobia Treatment Program is a remarkable find. What I have achieved in these days is thousand times more than what I have gained with the ongoing appointments with psychologists. There are no more fears whatsoever. I feel a lot more confident and in total control of my life like never before."

BEFORE? Social phobia kept me from enjoying life and always kept me away from interacting with others easily. I was afraid to interact with my colleagues and that hampered my career. AFTER? I now have a better work life. I am now very much normal on my workplace, sharing a great rapport with my colleagues here.

"I have tried this program and it was great. It is highly recommended. Social phobia is the worst thing to face, no one knows better than me. I feared my workplace like anything but now I have managed my way out, all because of Jan?s Phobia Treatment Program."

BEFORE? Being a financial advisor, I had to handle lots of stress and work pressure. This left me with no peace. It was a pressure that I was not being able to handle anymore. I always feared facing criticism from others. AFTER? My life has become much more easy-going and cool than it was before. Now, I have a happier life where I can handle professional matters better.

Fear of criticism has made an exit from my life, thanks to your amazing effective treatment system."

BEFORE? I had to climb stairs instead of taking the lift, which everyone would opt for. My doctor said I was claustrophobic. What was wrong with me is I tried and avoided all the suffocating environments. AFTER? The Phobia Release Program changed my lifestyle. Today I am no longer claustrophobic. Suffocating milieus? PST: Solo won't be FIFA Women's player of year

Hope Solo is ? by far ? the best goalkeeper in the world. Unfortunately, not everyone seems to think that way.

The United States netminder did not make FIFA?s shortlist for Women?s World Player of the Year.

The 10-women list is filled with deserving names including four Americans: Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, and Megan Rapinoe. One of the quartet will look to take home the trophy for the first time since Mia Hamm in 2002. That?s astonishing.

Marta, Canada?s Christine Sinclair, and Homare Sawa are three of the other big names to make the final cut.

Camille Abily from France and Japan?s Aya Miyama round out the group.

Solo was probably the biggest slight, especially considering Japan?s goalie Miho Fukumoto received a nod. Perhaps the American?s prickly personality and outspoken nature cost her with the voters. At least she got that cool shoe shown above.

The shortlist will be cut to three at an announcement in S?o Paulo on November 29, with the winners revealed at the FIFA Ballon d?Or gala on January 7.

Supposed first Jelly Bean build for Samsung Galaxy Note leaks out

Android Central

Excitement continues to build around the world for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 -- we're in NYC tonight for the Next Big Thing event -- but what of its predecessor? Owners of the original Galaxy Note are eagerly awaiting word on Jelly Bean for their beloved devices.

XDA Developers forums member eybee1970 has posted what is apparently the first full leaked official build of Android 4.1 for the original Note. However, this is an extremely early build, and flashing to your own devices is discouraged. Contained within are things we would expect to see from Jelly Bean -- Google Now for instance -- but there are things missing, and big nasty bugs within making this one not for the faint at heart.

Word is, that the official update could be due to drop in December. A software update in early September brought a selection of the Samsung features from the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 to the Note, but we're under no illusions that it's Jelly Bean you folks want.

Salt reduction ingredient made with microsphere technology cuts sodium without compromising taste

23 October, 2012 Tate & Lyle, the global ingredients and food solutions provider, announces the global launch of a ground breaking, new salt reduction ingredient, SODA-LO Salt Microspheres, that tastes, labels and functions like salt because it is salt. With SODA-LO, food manufacturers can reduce salt levels by 25 to 50 per cent in various applications without sacrificing taste.

SODA-LO Salt Microspheres has been created using a patent-pending technology that turns standard salt crystals into free-flowing crystalline microspheres. These smaller, lower-density crystals efficiently deliver salty taste by maximizing surface area relative to volume. SODA-LO makes it possible to enjoy the same salt taste while consuming lower levels of salt. Because SODA-LO is made from real salt, it has none of the bitter aftertaste or off-flavours associated with some other salt compounds or substitutes.

"As public health advocates continue to call for a reduction in salt intake worldwide, studies show that consumers associate products labelled as low-salt as having inferior taste," said Andy Hoffman, Director of Health and Wellness Innovation, Tate & Lyle. "Having a salt reduction alternative that's made from real salt and delivers on that taste expectation could be the first step towards breaking that link in people's minds that a low-salt product is a bland one."

Tate & Lyle testing shows that consumers perceive parity tastes between products made with regular salt and foods containing SODA-LO Salt Microspheres. Furthermore, consumers reported no "off" tastes.

"Salt is a staple in food production not just because of taste, but function, as well. It acts as a preservative and texturizing aid, for example. Through advanced technology, Tate & Lyle has produced salt microspheres to give manufacturers an ingredient that functions as well as, if not better, than salt," said David Lewis, Director, Health and Wellness Product Management, Tate & Lyle.

SODA-LO Salt Microspheres has been tested and shown to work well in a wide variety of foods including baked goods, breading and coatings, salty snacks and work continues to assess its suitability in a number of other applications.

SODA-LO Salt Microspheres was recently recognised as one of the most innovative new ingredients at Food Ingredients South America. Its global debut in North America and Europe will be next month at SupplySide West between 5-9 November 2012 (Las Vegas, Nevada) and Health Ingredients Europe between 13-15 November 2012 (Frankfurt, Germany).

Americans use more efficient and renewable energy technologies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Americans used less energy in 2011 than in the previous year due mainly to a shift to higher-efficiency energy technologies in the transportation and residential sectors. Meanwhile, less coal was used but more natural gas was consumed according to the most recent energy flow charts released by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Wind power saw the biggest jump from .92 quadrillion BTU, or quads, in 2010 up to 1.17 quads in 2011. (BTU or British Thermal Unit is a unit of measurement for energy and is equivalent to about 1.055 kilojoules).

"Wind energy jumped significantly because, as in previous years, many new wind farms came online," said A.J. Simon, an LLNL energy systems analyst who develops the flow charts using data provided by the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration. "This is the result of sustained investment in wind power."

Hydroelectricity also saw an increase going from 2.51 quads in 2010 up to 3.17 quads in 2011.

Hydroelectricity jumped significantly in 2011 because 2011 saw large amounts of precipitation in the Western U.S. Hydroelectric dams were able to produce at their maximum levels while keeping reservoirs full. Similar levels of hydroelectric production were seen in 1997, 1998 and 1999 due to wet years.

Overall, U.S. energy use in 2011 equaled 97.3 quads compared to the 98 quads used in 2010. Most of the energy was tied to coal, natural gas and petroleum.

From 2010 to 2011, use of coal fell dramatically, use of oil (petroleum) fell slightly and use of natural gas increased slightly from 24.65 quads in 2010 to 26.9 quads in 2011.

"Sustained low natural gas prices have prompted a shift from coal to gas in the electricity generating sector," Simon said. "Sustained high oil prices have likely driven the decline in oil use over the past 5 years as people choose to drive less and purchase automobiles that get more miles per gallon."

The majority of energy use in 2011 was used for electricity generation (39.2 quads), followed by transportation, industrial, commercial and residential consumption. However, energy use in the residential, commercial and transportation sectors decreased while industrial energy use increased if only slightly.

"With the advent of shale gas, it appears that natural gas prices in the United States may remain lower than their historical averages for many years into the future," Simon said. "This has prompted many gas users in the industrial and electricity generating sector to switch from coal or oil to natural gas when it is technically possible, but might not have been economical at higher gas prices."

Movie Review: ?7 Psychopaths? | Gay Richmond News - GayRVA

"7 Psychopaths" feels like another Tarantino-influenced letdown.

Read More: movie reviews, Movies

?7 Psychopaths.? Photo Credit: ?Blueprint Pictures.?

Martin McDonagh?s ?In Bruge? was a darkly funny comedy. This new effort lacks the comic spark, but it tries real hard. A screenwriter (Colin Farrell) gets entangled with wacky crooks when his friends (Sam Rockwell & Christopher Walken) kidnap a gangster?s Shih Tzu. The plot jumps from real time to storytime, which keeps it interesting, but the payoff doesn?t deliver. While there?s plenty of energy (and blunt violence) in the performances and the direction, most of the humor is pretty sophomoric. It felt like yet another Tarantino-influenced letdown.

GAY ANGLE: Gay slurs are peppered throughout and, surprisingly, not one of the 7 seems to be gay.

Jerry Williams reviewed movies for WTVR-TV for 14 years and for Style Weekly for 10 years. When he launched his own website in 1998 at TVJerry.com, he took his reviews to the Internet. Through those hundreds of reviews, Jerry kept his sexual orientation muted. So, he's excited to be adding "gay angles" to his postings for GayRVA.com.

Graphic shows 2012 World Series matchup between the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals

(AP) ? The World Series starts in San Francisco because the All-Star game was a Giant blowout. Pablo Sandoval, Matt Cain and Melky Cabrera made sure of it.

"I don't think you really think about it that much," Cain said, "but it is kind of cool when you do."

Cain pitched two shutout innings, Sandoval connected off Detroit's Justin Verlander for the first bases-loaded triple in All-Star history and Cabrera hit a two-run home run in the NL's 8-0 rout on that July night at Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium.

Since 2003, the All-Star-winning league has gained homefield advantage for the World Series. The Giants host the Tigers in the opener Wednesday night.

"When you go to the All-Star game, you have to take that thing serious," Sandoval said. "That's what we do. Cain, our guys, do our thing to try to bring this to the National League."

Verlander, the first pitcher in 19 years to sweep the Cy Young Award and MVP, admitted he didn't treat that start like a normal outing. That's part of the reason he'll be starting the Series opener at AT&T Park instead of at his own Comerica Park.

"Do I wish it would have worked out a little bit better and we'd be at home right now?" he said Tuesday. "Absolutely, but it didn't, and we're here."

Verlander allowed five runs and four hits in a 35-pitch first inning. He threw five pitches clocked at 100 mph and another at 101.

"But I had fun," he said then. "That's why I don't try to throw 100 in the first inning. But this is for the fans. It doesn't usually work out too well for me."

He has a slightly different take now.

"Normally I'm not just pitching one inning, two innings at the most," he said. "I treated it almost like I was coming out of the bullpen, knowing I could go one or two innings. It was just a different scenario altogether."

Barry Zito, the 2002 AL Cy Young winner, starts for San Francisco after being bypassed for the postseason two years ago when the Giants won their first title since 1954 ? before the franchise left New York.

Seeking its first championship since 1984, Detroit is back in the Series for the first time since 2006. Once again, the Tigers have had nearly a week off after winning the pennant. Last time, their rust showed and they lost to St. Louis in five games.

This time they stayed busy by working on bunts, playing against their instructional league team and letting Verlander throw to hitters.

"Well, we just tried to come up with something," manager Jim Leyland said. "It wasn't like in 2006, where some people would indicate we sat around happy to get there, not doing anything, eating bon-bons."

"That wasn't the case. We ran into bad weather problems in Detroit, so we were really handicapped," the manager said. "So this time we've done some things to try to keep us from being idle for four or five days. I definitely think it affected the last World Series."

Detroit swept the Yankees in the AL championship series while San Francisco overcame a 3-1 deficit against the Cardinals. That followed a historic division series in which they lost the first two games at home against Cincinnati and then became the first major league team in a best-of-five series to rebound from an 0-2 deficit by winning three in a row on the road.

"You have to throw it all away because it could work in either team's favor," Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford said. "We've been playing every day, so guys might be a little more tired, whereas they've got more rest. Then again, we've been playing, so we've got our timing, where they might not."

And this little fact: Three times in the past, the World Series has matched a team that went to Game 7 in the LCS against a club that swept its series. In all three instances, the team coming off a Game 7 win breezed: Boston swept Colorado in 2007, St. Louis topped the Tigers in 2006 and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Oakland in five games in 1988.

"We're fine. I think we're in the groove and feeling good," Cain said.

Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera was a rookie with the Marlins in 2003 when they rallied past the Chicago Cubs to win the seven-game NLCS and went on to beat the Yankees in six games for the title.

This time, the Tigers gave themselves five off days.

"We can't focus on, 'OK we haven't played, we're going to get down,'" Cabrera said. "It's tough. We have to be ready to play tomorrow and we'll see what happens."

These longtime franchises have never met in the postseason, and have played only 12 times since interleague action began in 1997. San Francisco holds a 7-5 edge from games in 2003, '05, '08 and '11.

"I don't really know the Giants that well," Leyland said. "I'm kind of getting a crash course."

Madison Bumgarner will pitch Game 2 against Doug Fister. When the Series shifts to Detroit on Saturday, Anibal Sanchez starts for the Tigers in Game 3 versus Ryan Vogelsong and Cain goes in Game 4 against Max Scherzer.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy could have flip-flopped, starting Cain on full rest in Game 3.

"Well, I like the way Vogelsong is throwing, too," Bochy said. "He's throwing the ball as well as anybody on the staff, so we just kept it in order. If Vogelsong gets the last start, we have no problem with that. I know Matt has worked hard, he's got a lot of innings. I didn't think we needed to flip-flop the two, to be honest."

NOTES: Bochy repeated the Giants had no intention of activating Cabrera, who finished serving his 50-game suspension at the end of the division series. Cabrera, the All-Star game MVP, was disciplined following a positive test for testosterone.

These outages would sometimes last for days until the lines could be repaired. In contrast, I have never experienced a weather-related outage with dish network that lasted for more than 30 minutes. You do not have to rely on wires that might be brought down in a storm since you receive the signal directly from the satellite. As long as you have power, you can watch TV. If you have some advices about satellite TV, you can write on windows hosting or buy domain name in domain shop to tell us.

Exclusive: U.S. LNG group to launch campaign for natgas exports

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Backers of liquefied natural gas will launch the first major campaign on Monday to press lawmakers to allow the sale of more U.S. gas abroad, as the industry push for exports intensifies.

The effort by the Center for Liquefied Natural Gas will include a new web site and outreach aimed at policymakers and the public, making the case that selling the nation's surplus natural gas to foreign countries will yield significant economic benefits and not drastically raise prices.

"There is a lot of stranded investment waiting to be unleashed in these projects that would pour billions of dollars into local and national economies, if the regulatory process would be freed up and allowed to move forward," Bill Cooper, the head of the LNG trade group, told Reuters.

President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger for the presidency, Mitt Romney, have both lauded the boom in U.S. shale oil and gas production as a critical component of moving the country toward "energy independence."

But, the winner of the November 6 election will have to contend with concerns about how to manage this newfound energy wealth.

While federal law allows exports of natural gas, the Energy Department has to determine whether expanded exports are in the national interest. Only one export terminal has been approved but decisions on about 10 applications have been delayed till a review on the implications of exports is completed.

Critics have argued the nation's vast gas reserves offer a strategic advantage that should be used to bolster U.S. industry, and exporting gas will hurt manufacturers currently experiencing a resurgence due to cheap energy costs.

While the initiative is not directed at influencing the election campaign, the LNG group hopes it will help to combat calls to limit exports and will speed up the stalled permitting process.

"The markets will react faster and impose limitations upon exports more efficiently than a regulator ever could," Cooper said.

Gas drillers contend that the current low natural gas prices are not sustainable and U.S. gas output will curtailed without exports, as production outpaces demand.

While some lawmakers have weighed in on the debate on gas exports, the issue has not necessarily risen to prominence on the campaign trail or in Congress yet, with only one hearing on the topic so far.

Initially, some in Congress seemed reluctant to take a strong position on a matter pitting manufacturers against the oil and gas industry.

DE FACTO MORATORIUM?

Natural gas exports to all but a handful of countries with free trade agreements with the United States require approval from the Energy Department.

After allowing gas exports from one project, Cheniere's Sabine Pass terminal, the Obama administration has put off approving any more applications pending the outcome of an economic analysis.

That study, commissioned by the administration to evaluate the potential effects of LNG exports, has been delayed repeatedly and is now expected to be released by the end of the year.

Cooper said the department's delays amount to a de facto moratorium on exports. He said he hopes the new initiative will push the department to issue the study and to move forward on export applications.

Cleveland Estate Planning Attorney Asks: Do You Know How to ...

Receiving an inheritance is both an honor and a responsibility, and estate planning attorneys constantly see individuals who are just not ready to take that on appropriately.? Unlike items of sentimental value, such as jewelry or family heirlooms, a financial inheritance was likely meant to be used toward your own monetary goals.? The temptation to simply spend away an inheritance as ?bonus? money can be strong, but there are a whole lot of very practical means by which to manage the funds for your own future.

When you receive an inheritance, you should look at how it fits into your overall financial plan.? Are you saving for a particular purchase, working toward paying off debt, or building a retirement fund for yourself?? These are all potential uses for the money which has been left to you.? You should also be aware that inheriting the funds may have tax implications.? Your Northeast Ohio estate planning attorney will be able to guide you when it comes to ways of reinvesting or living off of the inheritance in order to minimize the amount of taxes you will need to pay.

The types of inheritance you receive can certainly vary, with stocks, bonds, bank accounts, and insurance benefits all being possibilities.? The different types of sources and dispersal of funds may be governed by certain rules or laws.? For example, many people are surprised when their Cleveland Ohio trusts and estates attorney tells them they can have a limited amount of time to withdraw funds from an inherited retirement account, like a 401(k), 403 (b), or an IRA.? The rules and regulations won?t be the same for every type of account, but if you don?t find out what they are, you can end up paying a lot of penalties and fines out of the money you?ve inherited.

There may also be times when you feel you don?t need the money as much as another beneficiary and are willing to forego your share.? This might be for altruistic reasons or simply to protect your own tax situation.? In this case, you can work with your Northeast Ohio estate planning attorney to properly disclaim your inheritance.? Doing something along these lines can allow the money to ?flow? through you and to another beneficiary, possibly even one of your own children.

When it comes to managing your inheritance, there can be many complications to work through, and one of the best ways to minimize confusion is to work with a qualified Northeast Ohio attorney.? Remember the type of inheritance, your future goals, your tax situation, and even whether or not you ?need? the inheritance will all come into play when determining what the best route is for you to take.

Our attorneys are ready to answer your questions and assist you with the implementation of your financial goals.??? To schedule a complimentary Protect My Future Planning Session with the mention of this article, simply call our office at (440)449-3266 or email AH3@AGHehr.com.

Gunmen kill 3 police, 1 prison official in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Gunmen killed three policemen and a prison official in attacks on Saturday and overnight in Baghdad, Iraqi authorities said.

The first attack took place early in the morning when gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in the Shiite Muslim neighborhood of al-Shaab, killing two policemen and wounding another, police said.

In downtown Karradah, gunmen on Friday night attacked the house of a police lieutenant colonel who worked with the State Identity Directorate, killing him, police said.

Health officials at nearby hospitals confirmed the deaths. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Meanwhile, gunmen with pistols fitted with silencers killed Haider al-Sultani, an official at Taji prison, in a drive-by-shooting that seriously wounded another employee, said Haider al-Saadi, spokesman for the Iraqi Justice Ministry.

The Taji prison lies in a town with the same name, 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Baghdad.

The attack took place during the morning rush hour while the two were travelling on Canal Highway in eastern Baghdad, al-Saadi added.

Violence has ebbed in Iraq since the peak of the bloodletting in 2005-2008, but insurgents still frequently attack government officials and security forces in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.

Taxes go up next year, no matter who's president

By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, The Associated Press

President Barack Obama isn't talking about it and neither is Mitt Romney. But come January, 163 million workers can expect to feel the pinch of a big tax increase regardless of who wins the election.

A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea.

Even Republicans who have sworn off tax increases have little appetite to prevent one that will cost a typical worker about $1,000 a year, and two-earner family with six-figure incomes as much as $4,500.

Why are so many politicians sour on continuing the payroll tax break?

Republicans question whether reducing the tax two years ago has done much to stimulate the sluggish economy. Politicians from both parties say they are concerned that it threatens the independent revenue stream that funds Social Security.

They are backed by powerful advocates for seniors, including AARP, who adamantly oppose any extension.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

The question of renewing the payroll tax cut has been overshadowed by the expiration of a much bigger package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush. The Bush-era tax cuts also expire at the end of the year, and Congress is expected to try to address them after the election, in a lame-duck session.

The payroll tax cut could become part of the mix in negotiations that could go in many directions. But lawmakers in both political parties say they doubt it.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Before he was named as Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., disparaged the payroll tax cut, calling it "sugar-high economics" that wouldn't promote long-term growth.

Social Security is funded by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100, rising to $113,700 in 2013. Half is paid by employers and the other half is paid by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

A worker making $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week. A worker making $100,000 saved $2,000 a year.

The beauty of the tax cut is that is shows up in weekly paychecks, giving workers more money to spend or save. The downside is that some workers may not notice a $19-a-week increase in pay, making them unlikely to credit the politicians who made it happen.

Under the law, Congress is reimbursing Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

Democrats are more willing to defend the tax cut, saying it helped prop up the economy during a rough stretch while providing what amounted to a 2 percent pay increase to millions of middle-income workers. But they, too, are concerned about maintaining Social Security's source of revenue.

"I think people realize that was a temporary thing," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said he thinks there is evidence that the tax cut helped the economy. But, he added, "I'm not sure that it met expectations."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to let the tax cut expire.

Larry Summers, Obama's former economic adviser, is a lonely voice in Washington calling to extend the payroll tax cut. He said in a recent speech that the economy is too fragile to reduce workers' incomes.

Obama pushed for the tax cut in late 2010 as a way to increase workers' take-home pay to help boost consumer spending and provide a spark for the economy. Economists were divided on the economic benefits. Many said it probably helped increase consumer spending but there was no consensus on the magnitude.

The initial tax cut was for only a year, and many Republicans in Congress wanted to let it lapse at the end of 2011. But Obama and Democratic lawmakers successfully fought to extend it through 2012.

Obama, however, didn't include the tax cut in his 2013 budget proposal, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress this year that he saw no reason to extend it again.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage wouldn't rule out an extension but wouldn't commit to one, either.

"The president fought extremely hard last year in the face of Republican opposition to ensure that the payroll tax cut was extended," Brundage said. "There are a number of tax issues that Congress will have to deal with at the end of the year, this being one of them, and we will continue to evaluate all of the options available to us at that time."

Romney's campaign hammers Obama almost every day for proposing to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. But Romney's tax plan would let the payroll tax cut expire, an issue he doesn't mention on the stump.

Romney's campaign declined to discuss the issue.

CNBC's Courtney Reagan reports House Democrat Chris Van Hollen is calling for extending the 2 percent payroll tax holiday; and NBC affiliate WOOD found workers at the Chevy Volt Battery's Grand Rapids plant of LG Chem may be getting paid to do nothing.
