Iraq Bombings: Mortar Bombs Rock Baghdad, Killing At Least 6, Wounding Dozens

* Two mortar bombs target Shi'ite pilgrims
* Security forces on high alert ahead of religious festival
* Iraqi al Qaeda wing claims Shi'ite office attack (Adds details, background)
By Kareem Raheem
BAGHDAD, June 10 (Reuters) - Two mortar bombs struck a square filled with Shi'ite Muslim pilgrims in Iraq's capital Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least six people and wounding 38, police and hospital sources said.
Although overall violence in Iraq has dropped, Sunni Islamist insurgents with links to al Qaeda are still capable of lethal attacks and hit Shi'ite targets to stir up the kind of sectarian pressure that almost led to civil war in 2006-2007.
Sectarian tensions have been high in Iraq since the withdrawal of U.S. forces in December, with the country's main Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish blocs locked in a political crisis that threatens to wreck a power-sharing deal.
Sunday's attack occurred in Quraish Square in Baghdad's northwestern Kadhimiya district, where pilgrims were gathering ahead of a religious festival to mark the anniversary of the death of mediaeval Shi'ite imam Moussa al-Kadhim.
Police sources said the death toll could rise.
During the same religious pilgrimage in 2005, about 1,000 people were killed when rumours of a bombing on the Bridge of the Imams - which leads to the golden-domed shrine - triggered a stampede that clogged the river below with bodies.
An Interior Ministry source said security forces had been put on high alert and that a tight security belt was in place around Kadhimiya in a bid to prevent further attacks on pilgrims walking towards the Imam Kadhim shrine.
A vehicle ban, excluding emergency vehicles like ambulances, would be imposed in Kadhimiya from Monday and anyone entering the area would be physically searched, said the source, declining to be identified.
At least 26 people were killed and more than 190 wounded last Monday when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-packed car outside a Shi'ite Muslim office in central Baghdad.
A group that monitors online communication among insurgents said on Sunday Al Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq had claimed responsibility for the attack on the government-run Shi'ite Endowment, which manages Shi'ite religious and cultural sites.
The U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group said the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) group also said in the statement posted on Islamist websites that it had carried out 39 other attacks targeting Iraqi security forces and officials in Baghdad between March 24 and May 21. Celebrity real estate: Fallon, Danes, Falco list in N.Y.

By Zillow staff

The latest celebrity real estate news is all out of New York. Claire Danes and husband Hugh Dancy listed their SoHo co-op, Jimmy Fallon's childhood home in upstate is for sale and Edie Falco's Tribeca penthouse is listed.

Claire Danes lists SoHo apartment

Zillow

Claire Danes' apartment is a light-filled loft space.

Born-and-raised New Yorker Claire Danes may be considered a Hollywood star, but she chooses to live in her childhood neighborhood of SoHo rather than Los Angeles.

And although Danes and her husband Hugh Dancy have just listed their SoHo apartment for $5.988 million, it's doubtful she'll be moving West anytime soon.

Danes got her big start on the mid-90s television show "My So-Called Life." In the role she earned an Emmy nomination and won the a Golden Globe. She then moved on to film, nabbing the role of Juliet in "Romeo + Juliet," opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Currently, she's back in television, starring in Showtime's "Homeland," in a role for which she received the 2012 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series.

Danes' SoHo condo is in an 1882 building, marked by exterior columns and exposed wood beams. It sits on a quiet, cobblestone street. Inside, Danes' 4,000-square-foot loft-like apartment has high ceilings, 16 windows, exposed brick and hardwood floors. The 3-bed, 3-bath home also includes a wood-burning fireplace and direct elevator access.

The listing is held by Elaine Schweninger of Town Real Estate.

According to Zillow's mortgage calculator, a monthly payment on the home would be $21,821, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year-mortgage.

Jimmy Fallon's childhood home in upstate New York is on the market

Zillow

Jimmy Fallon spent most of his childhood in this Saugerties home.

Before Jimmy Fallon cracked jokes on Saturday Night Live and later as the host of NBC's "Late Night," he was like most kids, spending his days playing in the backyard.

Fallon's childhood home in Saugerties is now available for a new family (and perhaps future comic) to move in. The home is listed for $210,000 on Saugerties real estate market.

Fallon's sister, Gloria, mentioned the family home is for sale in her blog, "Growing Up Fallon." According to listing information, the 3-bedroom, 2-bath home was previously sold for $85,000 in 2004; Fallon and his family moved to the home in the late 1970s.

Sitting on a half-acre lot, the single-family home has a flat grassy play area,?is fenced in and, according to the listing, is "safe for children or pets." Inside, it's noted that some "cosmetic updates" are needed, but the home has 1,780-square-feet of living space, hardwood and ceramic floors, a large "country kitchen," and upstairs study.

Additionally on the property is a recently renovated cottage that "has it all...even a built-in keg." A post on Fallon's site says that Fallon's grandfather lived there during his childhood, but doesn't mention the keg.

The home first hit the market March 30 and has already had a price cut by $10,000.

Fallon still lives in New York; he recently purchased a new home in the Hamptons for $5.7 million.

Edie Falco nurses Manhattan real estate market with new listing

Zillow

Edie Falco's condo features exposed brick walls and high ceilings.

In the latest edition of "Working Mother," actress Edie Falco talks about the new Manhattan apartment she recently bought and how she donated her kitchen to a company that resells the goods and donates proceeds to charity.

While we don't know where Falco and her two kids are now calling their Big Apple home, we do know that the award-winning star of "The Sopranos" and "Nurse Jackie" has listed her duplex in the Tribeca real estate market of New York City.

Calling it a "ZenSational in Tribeca,'' Falco's penthouse condo has 4 bedrooms plus a home office, 3 full bathrooms, soaring ceilings and 2 terraces that add an additional 950 square feet to the apartment's interior 3,000 square feet.

Falco bought the condo for $3.8 million in 2005, which is the same year she adopted her son, Anderson. In 2008, she added daughter Macy to the clan, which may be part of the reason why the Falcos needed new digs.

While Falco has taken some hits for the low-key decor of her condo, the talented actress makes no bones about the long hours she keeps while plying her trade (she just signed on for a play at the non-profit Manhattan Theatre Club's 2012-2013 season) plus the time she puts in parenting her kids.

In her Working Mother interview, Falco said raising her kids in Manhattan has its challenges.

Originally, I was intimidated by the concept. After all, I grew up in the laid-back suburbs of Long Island. I think being a New York City mom can be scary, because there?s a lot of micromanaging and helicopter parenting, and I?m not like that at all. It took me a while to realize I could parent Anderson [age 7] and Macy [age 3] my own way, and, happily, my kids are thriving.

US and Mexico strike public safety spectrum deal along national borders

US and Mexico strike public safety spectrum deal along national borders

The FCC announced today that Chairman Julius Genachowski has entered into an agreement with Mexico's telecommunications officials to create a new spectrum sharing scheme along the nation's borders. The move will normalize 800MHz and 1900MHz spectrum use within 68 miles of the common border, and is primarily intended to reduce interference and allow for reliable public safety communications in the region. Further rollout of commercial services is also central to the pact, as Sprint has been authorized to deploy its CDMA service in the 1900MHz spectrum along the border. The move is hardly a free gift, however, as Sprint had previously surrendered a share of its 800MHz holdings to pave way for the agreement. A bi-national task force will oversee the adjustment process, and both nations have agreed to discuss future spectrum coordination along the border in future meetings. Proof that cooperation isn't completely dead, folks. To gain a greater understanding of where both nations are headed, just hop the break for the announcement.

Time For An African Valley? ? Sub-Saharan Accelerators Start To Emerge

47662721NEPADMAP_400The news that i/o Ventures had launched the Savannah Fund in Africa is clearly welcome news for an emerging continent. It's $10m fund size will be a shot in the arm for the eco-system there. But I was surprised to see that it was being described in some quarters as the "first ever" Sub-Saharan African incubator and accelerator. Because it patently is not. "I think MEST would actually be the first model in this space," said African tech watcher Ben White of vc4africa.biz when I asked him about this. MEST has a fund size of $20m, although it's invested via a non-profit. So to start getting into this, it may be that we are well over-due for a run-down of accelerators in Africa. Here's what we've found so far.
